Windridge - Meet the Breeders

Paula grew up in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario where, even as a child, her mother had to pry her off the neck of every dog that happened by! As a toddler when she couldn’t be found on her grandparent’s farm, Paula’s very patient father could always locate her in the field with the cows.

As a child, Paula loved and kept every type of animal – guinea pigs, gerbils, budgies, canaries, cats and dogs.  At the age of 14 she purchased her first horse with hard-earned babysitting money. During high school, Paula worked at a veterinary clinic, and this is where her dream of a career working with animals began.  

Paula completed her Animal Health Technician course at Seneca College, and has been a Registered Veterinary Technician at the Toronto Zoo since 1981.

Paula is married to Steve, a very handsome, sensitive, overworked, intelligent environmental consultant, who picks up the slack and helps with all the behind scene management when Paula is unavailable.  They have an amazing daughter, Sarah, who is absolutely great with the babies. Their wonderful hobby farm has allowed the Roberts family the luxury of living with their much loved animal companions.

In 1986 Paula rescued their first bullmastiff from an abusive situation; the love affair with Bullmastiffs began. ‘Dougal’ was the first inhabitant of the ‘Windridge Zoo’.

The first two bitches hailed from Halocrest Bullmastiffs. Both of these sweet girls acquired their Canadian Championships, and ‘Punkin’, earned her American Championship as well. Her first litter was sired by the Top Winning Bullmastiff of all time - Champion ‘DOX Fast Freddy of Shadyoak’. The second litter was from the spectacular Champion ‘Blackslates Boston Brahmin’. Over the years, many outstanding canine family members / show dogs have been produced. In addition, Windridge purchased several lovely bitches from notable breeders such as Susan Crawford of ‘DOX’ and Candy Welch of ‘Grawel’. These bitches acclaimed themselves by winning ‘Best of Opposite Sex’ at Specialty Shows and by producing many amazing puppies.

When Sarah was young, Paula acquired ‘Zachary’ from Virginia Rowlands. Zachary was Paula’s first French Bulldog; the ‘Frenchie bug’ bit hard! As described by Paula: “These clowns are the most wonderful dogs. They have incredible personalities and we are thrilled to be contributing to the development of this amazing breed. Did I mention they were clowns?"

So, now you have a sense of what a “passion for animals’ truly means! To quote Paula:

“ I could go into our life with the horses, or Sarah’s showing schedule with the horses, or how we slip in time our pet cow (the 1800 lb lawn ornament) … but I would rather you just meet them when you come to our home. We will be thrilled to meet with you and to help you find a life long companion for you and your family to love”.
