Bullmastiff Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

ArielQuestion 1. Do Bullmastiffs drool?

All dogs drool, especially after they have a drink, or if they are panting.

Bullmastiffs may drool a bit more than say, a lab, but I find it depends on how loose a lip they have. The tighter the lip the less the drool.

Question 2. How much food do they eat?

As a puppy, a bullmastiff grows about five pounds a week. When they are growing at this rate you will find they consume more food than a adult bullmastiff does. As an adult they eat 2 to 3 cups of good quality dog food two times daily.

Question 3. Are they good family dogs?

Yes, they are great for a family. A large dog, any dog for that matter should not be left with small children unattended. If a child runs, a dog chases, it's just instinct. A child doesn't go into the dogs crate, that's the dogs space. Are they good with children? Yes, but, your children need to know what is acceptable behavior as well as your dog.

Question 4. Do I suggest obedience school?

Most definitely. Bullmastiffs are very trainable dogs, but I find they can be stubborn. All dogs need extensive socialization as a pup. They need to see other dogs and cars and people of different ages and races. What you put in you get out ten fold.

Question 5. What colours do they come in?

Bullmastiffs come in brindle, red and fawn colours.

Question 6. How much exercise do they require?

Overall bullmastiffs are quite laid back and don't require extensive exercising. Some are major couch potatoes and don't even want to go for that one walk a day. Most do fine with the one walk, there are a few however that are higher energy and do well with 2 or 3 walks a day..

Question 7. Do you suggest a male or a female?

I tell people it is a personal preference, especially when the dogs are being spayed or neutered. It boils down to the approximately 30 pounds difference in body weight and whether or not you want your grass or your trees killed with urine!
